Insect meat is nutritious. It’s tasty with some recipes. At that, insects grow faster. The efficiency factor of breeding them is higher, the ecological impact for producing the same amount of calories is lower. The only drawback about using insect meat is – who in the world will eat that?! Even the soy in an Impossible Foods burger inspires less internal protest than minced maggots.
As it turns out, someone got interested. Black soldier fly is used for producing animal food. Birds, fish, and dogs don’t know how to read the ingredients of the food, they have no uppity, they eat processed insects with pleasure. In some situations it is economically more advantageous than the traditional menu.
I found out about such an approach from the example of LoopWorm, the Indian startup of the day, but Wikipedia writes that they are by far not the first and the concept has been applied ‘for a while.’
