User Interviews – Convenient Customer Development by Alexander Gornyi

Everybody knows how important feedback from users and potential client is. Customer Development becomes the subject of books, paid courses, conferences, and soon enough, there may even be movies. But in real life, it is rarely practiced.

One of the reasons is the trivial inconvenience. Where do you find a client who fits our requirements and also is willing to talk? ‘Here,’ – answers User Interviews, the American startup of the day. It gathered those who like to talk for money on its platform and sells access to its database to those who like Customer Development.

A regular offer for a person looks as follows: you need to look for a pediatrician for your child, we pay you 50 dollars for a one-hour call in Zoom. One may encounter more peculiar requests ‘you are responsible for IT procurements in a company with 50-100 employees,’ for example. The client company pays for the interviewee’s reward and a service fee, 45 or 90 dollars at the minimal rate.

User Interviews brought in a little under USD 30M of investment in its latest round. For all of us, it is a curious example of interim positioning: slightly above this niche there is a competitive market of similar marketplaces of expert consultancy for 500 dollars per hour, slightly below there are user surveys that cost 5 dollars per survey, and the startup entered the interim niche.
