Recently, we’ve been observing a rapid evolution of cyber warfare strategies and its players. Ever more often, we can trace the mutual connection between cyber attacks and geopolitical events. For instance, Microsoft Threat Analysis Center (MTAC) published a report on how Digital Threats from East Asia Increase in Breadth and Effectiveness on September 7th 2023, where the growing digital threat from the East Asian region are investigated. In particular, the report highlights cyber threats coming from China where Chinese cyber groups connected to the state engage in cyber espionage against governments and organizations of critical importance in the Southern Chinese Sea region. China also directs its cyber efforts toward the American defence sector and explores the country’s infrastructure with the purpose of competitive gain in international relationships, as well as strategic military purposes. At that, it is worthwhile to pay special attention to China’s increasing efficiency in operations of influence (the capacity of influencing the behavior of groups and individuals), particularly in the social media. To interact with users actively, a significant amount of non-authentic user accounts in social media is employed. Cyber agents and subjects of influence deploy active cyber activity, using propaganda to spread and promote the corresponding narratives and contributing to the intensification of frictions between the target audiences.
To secure against cyber threats and safeguard vulnerable audiences, it is crucial to establish partnerships between governmental and private sectors. Cooperation with startups in the field of cyber security can contribute to the innovation and improvements in the field of overall security, which has a significant meaning for solving today’s challenges.
