This November, Profluo—the Romanian agentic AI platform for automating the processing of financial and operational documents—raised its Seed Extension round of EUR 850K from BCR Seed Starter and Inspire Capital. BCR Seed Starter became the lead investor, contributing EUR 500K to the round.

Early Development and ML Breakthroughs

Profluo’s CEO Bogdan Năforniță has over 20 years of experience as the finance manager and CFO for companies like P&G and IBM. He developed the idea of Profluo evolved from his own critical need for intelligent automation of the transactional work in finance departments. In 2016, he enlisted Cosmin Merișescu, who had been coordinating and managing software and agile web projects for more than 20 years, as the Chief Technical Architect to create Profluo.

Between 2017 and 2021, the company focused intensively on developing a machine learning powered system that could learn from accounting documents and automate their processing — reducing manual work, accelerating document processing, and cutting human error.

Initial Funding, Investor Confidence, and Team Expansion

Dan Călugăreanu, Partner at Early Game Ventures

In 2022, Profluo secured its first Seed funding of EUR 500K from Early Game Ventures. This injection allowed the company to scale and refine its technology, positioning it for commercial growth. As a result, by early 2023 the round was joined by a group of angel investors, bringing the total funding to EUR 625K..

Profluo has demonstrated that it can deliver quality growth, based on a performing product and a rigorous approach to the target market. We are delighted to support the company’s accelerated growth and their international scaling plans!’ Early Game Ventures’ partner Dan Călugăreanu notes.

‘The Profluo team built a solution that combines AI and a deep understanding of the challenges finance teams face, offering a scalable platform that is quick to integrate and has a direct impact on customer productivity. From our perspective, this is the ideal formula for international expansion and for setting a new standard in how organizations manage financial workflows,’ BCR Seed Starter’s Chief Investment Officer Adrian Roșoagă agrees.

As the team grew, it brought in AI experts, software developers, and accounting specialists, improving the product and adding new features. By closely collaborating with clients, Profluo built strong, trust-based relationships while anticipating market trends. By 2024, the company had become a benchmark in both technology and accounting in Romania, demonstrating successful digital transformation and positioning itself as a model for innovation-driven startups.

AI/ML-Powered at Scale

What Profluo offers today is a platform that digitalizes and automates accounting and document-processing workflows through AI agents. Each agent functions as part of a virtual accounting team, handling a specific workflow such as detailed accounting, treasury management, commercial controlling, customized automatic approvals, employee advance payments, or reimbursements.

Powered by multiple ML engines and vision-language models, trained on about 4 million real client documents, the platform can accurately read, extract, and validate data from documents at scale. By learning from past interactions, Profluo continuously improves its performance, adapting to new document formats and workflow requirements. This approach allows companies to process large volumes of documents quickly and with precision, significantly reducing human errors while streamlining finance operations and enabling teams to focus on higher-value tasks.

Seeing how the AI agents get trained on a great number of real documents, the need arises for Profluo to ensure that the data is representative across industries and geographies and that agents don’t inadvertently learn biases or errors from that data. WIth this purpose, each agent gets a generic pre-training and a finetuning layer focused on client-specific scenarios, with direct and effortless supervision from client’s expert users.

Bogdan Năforniță, Co-Founder and CEO at Profluo

‘Also, all learning and predictions happen only within a legal entity context, which is also properly guard-railed and served with the proper confidentiality context observed,’ Mr Năforniță comments.

SAF-T and ViDA Compliance

It is also crucial for Profluo to keep its AI models up to date as regulatory frameworks, such as SAF-T or ViDA, evolve across Europe. According to Mr Năforniță, Profluo’s Accounting ML Engine regularly forecasts SAF-T codes for compliance purposes. Since Romania was among the first jurisdictions to embrace a future-proof, detailed SAF-T reporting, Profluo got exposed to this important compliance need of customers early on, which turned out quite helpful.

As for ViDA, it comes with a future obligation to make e-Invoicing interoperable across EU members. In turn, Profluo’s e-Invoicing parser can easily convert from one format to another, including both optical and electronic formats. The company already has multinational customers that use us across multiple jurisdictions, including Romania, Germany, Belgium, Poland, France, with more formats and transmission protocols added constantly.

Mr Năforniță highlights Profluo’s key differentiator: the proprietary AI doesn’t just process documents blindly, it understands local rules and variations, resolves inconsistencies, and then triggers smart automations that adapt to each unique scenario. I.e. the AI acts as an intelligent interpreter and compliance enforcer, making sure that documents from different sources are reconciled and correctly formatted for SAF‑T and ViDA submissions.

Specialized AI Agents for Financial Workflows

The CEO reiterates Profluo’s standout features:

  • ‘Profluo’s functionalities are organized as AI Agents that are specialized on the main financial audit cycles of companies: Record-to-Report, Source-to-Pay, Order-to-Cash, Treasury, Employee Disbursements. These AI Agents act as ‘sub-minds’ for the typical F&A department roles;
  • AI Agents are notoriously volatile, slow, and quite expensive in their work output. Due to the use of proprietary ML algorithms on top of Agents, Profluo boasts great performance in terms of speed (5 seconds for full accounting work per document) and accuracy (~98% on detailed accounting predictions across multiple dimensions, as measured over more than 35 million accounting postings);
  • E-Invoicing is a strong trend across Europe and other parts of the world. There are multiple standards, transmission protocols, and ambiguities related to compliance and automations. Due to our early start, Profluo’s AI is fully competent on all e-Invoicing-related aspects and versions across all jurisdictions where e-Invoicing is an upcoming subject.’

Investor Perspective and Market Opportunity

Adrian Roșoagă, Chief Investment Officer at BCR Seed Starter

As Profluo’s new investors, the BCR Seed Starter team sees the startup as a valuable opportunity in a market segment with huge potential for transformation.

‘The global market of AI based solutions for the automatization of financial and accounting processes is one of the largest and most dynamic in the enterprise software sector, and the need that Profluo addresses is universal: every company, regardless of size or industry, processes financial documents and can benefit from the efficiency and accuracy brought by this technology,’ Mr Roșoagă states.

‘Profluo’s team impressed us with their strong combination of strategic discipline, passion for technological innovation, and deep market insight. Profluo’s solution stands out not only because of its product excellence, but also because of the way it addresses genuine pain points in the daily operations of finance and accounting departments. The work and progress they’ve accomplished so far also confirms their potential for rapid growth, and we are proud to support them on their journey toward becoming a leading player in accounting process automation,’ BCR Seed Starter’s CEO Carmen Dibuș continues.

Strategic Use of Capital

Carmen Dibuș, CEO at BCR Seed Starter

Profluo declares plans to use the newly raised capital to strengthen key departments, enabling the company to scale its mission rapidly at the international level. The mission is to redefine, through relevant, accurate, and immediately applicable AI, the way in which financial and operational departments handle complex and massive flows of documents and financial-accounting data, bringing efficiency and transparency, thus freeing up people’s time for more creativity and strategy.

‘First off, it will enable us to secure the right partners that would like to quickly inject serious AI interventions in the finance departments of their clients, while creating novel service offerings. There are very interesting opportunities for our partners when it comes to packaging finance services with a potent, affordable AI solution, especially in Finance BPO (Business Process Outsourcing) and system integration,’ Mr Năforniță specifies.

‘Second, AI agents are powerful but particularly tricky to implement in large companies, even more so in finance. To be honest, LLMs make for spectacular demos but the road to making them production-ready and really useful is very hard. So, we will continue to invest in our AI differentiators,’ the entrepreneur adds.

Expanding Beyond Finance and Accounting

The team also sees significant further opportunities to expand its platform beyond traditional finance and accounting use cases. Seeing how invoices, for example, are documents that are relevant across multiple departments, including Procurement, Treasury, and Commercial teams, Profluo has received numerous requests from clients seeking to leverage its AI agents in those areas. By extending its agentic capabilities, the platform aims to provide automation solutions to serve a broader range of organizational workflows, enabling different departments to process, validate, and act on documents efficiently while reducing manual work and errors. BCR, for one, is already testing the Profluo platform in various areas with large volumes of financial documents involved, with significant potential for use in multiple areas.

Profluo’s solution represents a transformative approach to financial and operational automation, combining advanced AI with deep domain expertise to streamline complex workflows. By ensuring accuracy, regulatory compliance, and adaptability across multiple jurisdictions and departments, it allows organizations to process vast volumes of documents efficiently while minimizing errors. As businesses increasingly seek intelligent automation to enhance productivity and strategic focus, a platform like Profluo stands out as a key enabler of digital transformation in finance and beyond.
