Amid persistent Russian attacks damaging Ukraine’s energy infrastructure, Tech4Good launched a global initiative in late 2024 to identify and implement innovative energy solutions that strengthen the country’s resilience. The Challenge drew 75 submissions from across the world, with six pioneering projects chosen for deployment, featuring technologies such as biomass-based energy systems, micro wind turbines, and portable solar generators.

Reliable Energy Anywhere

Among these top participants, PhotonSolarSystems from Italy was selected to deliver its cutting-edge solution. The company has developed a versatile, portable energy device capable of providing reliable power under any conditions, making it invaluable during natural disasters and emergencies. Driven by a team of innovation-oriented engineers, PhotonSolarSystems specializes in compact renewable technologies for rapid deployment in critical situations. Their adaptable products and expertise position them to make a tangible contribution to Ukraine’s energy resilience, supporting recovery and sustainable energy independence amid ongoing challenges.

On October 29th, PhotonSolarLabs was among three companies from the Tech4Good Global Challenge #1: Energy for Ukraine initiative that showcased their resilient and sustainable energy technologies designed to support Ukraine’s recovery and long-term energy independence at the 14th International Festival of Innovative Projects “Sikorsky Challenge 2025.”

ITKeyMedia approached PhotonSolarLabs’ founder and CEO Tommaso Milone to dive deeper into what his solution has to offer:

How did the idea for Photon Solar Systems come to be? What was the inspiration behind its development?

Tommaso Milone: In addition to being the CEO of Photon Solar Systems, I’m also an FPV drone builder and racer with over eight years of experience. While flying drones in remote mountain areas without access to the grid, I often had to return home just to recharge batteries. This need was what inspired me to create a portable solar generator, allowing me to fly anywhere, anytime, fully energy-independent.

What challenges did your team face while developing your device? How did you overcome them?

TM: The main challenge was designing a system that’s both lightweight and durable, capable of operating in harsh environments while remaining compact and all-in-one. We wanted something simple, portable, and ready to use without cables or complex setups. We overcame this by developing a custom, patented design with extensive engineering focus on materials and electronics, sticking to the highest-quality components available on the market.

What are the key advantages of Photon Solar Systems’ portable solar solution compared to competitors in the market?

Tommaso Milone, Founder and CEO at PhotonSolarSystems

TM: First of all, we are the only company offering a military-grade shell capable of withstanding impacts and harsh environments. Our device is also waterproof and dustproof, ensuring operation anywhere, features most competitors lack. Moreover, our system is completely all-in-one, so users don’t need to carry cables, bags, or external modules: everything is integrated for fast deployment and effortless transportation.

Unlike other generators, Photon devices offer remote communication and control, allowing users to operate them from anywhere, not just on-site. Our platform can harvest energy from multiple sources — solar, wind, hydro or any DC input — while others are predominantly limited to specific inputs. Beyond energy generation, it also functions as a transport and mounting platform for antennas, Starlink systems, electronics, and more.

In short, it is not just a battery pack, it’s a multi-purpose, high-end power system that combines compactness, resistance, and advanced functionality, standing far above any traditional portable generator on the market.

What might be the expected long-term environmental benefits of using Photon Solar Systems’ solar generators over traditional fossil-fuel-based generators?

TM: Our generators can harness both solar, hydro, and wind energy and be expanded with our B36 battery units to reach 5–12 kWh of storage without losing compactness or durability. This contributes directly to ESG and EU decarbonization goals by eliminating fuel use, noise, and emissions. Users no longer need to handle fuel logistics since they can simply choose the best renewable source available, whether solar, wind, or hydro to power their appliances.

How do you envision the local manufacturing process working in Ukraine? What role do you see for Ukrainian companies in this initiative?

TM: We are open to collaborations with Ukrainian companies to assemble and produce devices locally, reducing production times and costs. We can develop a customized version of our system tailored to Ukrainian needs, while transferring the technical know-how required for local manufacturing and long-term independence.

How do you validate the technology’s performance in real-world conditions?

TM: We have tested multiple generations of our devices in extreme environments, from Italian alpine refuges in freezing winters to hot summer conditions, in both industrial and remote contexts. Our validation protocol includes leaving devices in isolated areas for 6–9 months, monitoring performance and health remotely through our telemetry system to ensure reliability over time.

How do you plan to keep the costs affordable while maintaining high performance, especially in emerging markets like Ukraine?

TM: We plan to design localized versions focusing only on essential functions for each market, reducing costs without compromising reliability. Bulk orders will further lower production expenses, and sourcing local Ukrainian components will not only make the product more affordable but also support the national economy and local supply chains.

What other countries or regions do you see as potential markets for Photon Solar Systems after Ukraine?

TM: We aim to expand to regions affected by conflicts, natural disasters, and energy insecurity. In Europe, key markets include Hungary, Poland, Norway, and Spain. Beyond Europe, the United States represents a strong opportunity, given its demand for reliable, portable renewable energy in both civilian and defense applications.

How do you assess the impact of your portable solar solution on energy resilience in crisis situations like Russia’s war against Ukraine?

TM: I believe we’re the only company capable of properly addressing this problem, thanks to the flexible nature of our device and its military-grade shell, combined with all the other features that allow it to operate in truly harsh environments. That’s why, we plan to serve and support every possible emergency scenario, from shelter and home applications to network communications and defense operations, with a single device capable of handling them all. With this in mind, we aim to support every aspect of the country’s challenges, helping to rebuild and ensure energy independence so that no one has to worry about power availability again.

PhotonSolarSystems’ innovative portable energy solution represents an invaluable tool for enhancing Ukraine’s energy resilience amid ongoing infrastructure challenges and conflict-related disruptions. Its participation in the Tech4Good Global Challenge #1: Energy for Ukraine highlights the vital role of global collaboration and cutting-edge technologies in addressing urgent energy needs. By combining durability, versatility, and renewable energy integration, PhotonSolarSystems offers a practical and scalable solution that can support both emergency response and long-term energy independence for Ukraine.
