Quantum computing is no longer confined to research centers. IBM, Google, and Microsoft have already made quantum resources accessible through their cloud platforms, such as Azure Quantum Computing.
As with any innovation, increasing demand gradually lowers costs, and what was yesterday an experiment is becoming part of present-day business reality. This is particularly important today, as more and more companies migrate to the cloud.
What we encrypt today using classical algorithms could be decrypted tomorrow. The ‘harvest now, decrypt later’ risk is real: attackers can copy encrypted data now with the purpose of breaking it in the future when quantum computers become more powerful.
That is why the development of three key areas is only a matter of time:
- First and foremost is post-quantum cryptography (PQC), as standards are already established and providers are testing hybrid protocols in cloud environments.
- Meanwhile, zero-knowledge proofs (ZKP) are rapidly gaining traction, particularly in finance, blockchain, and digital identity.
- Finally, fully homomorphic encryption (FHE) is a powerful tool for medicine and finance, although it still requires optimization for widespread adoption.
The rise of quantum computing is reshaping the cybersecurity landscape, making proactive adaptation essential for all organizations. Companies that embrace post-quantum cryptography, zero-knowledge proofs, and homomorphic encryption will be better prepared for emerging threats. Ultimately, integrating these technologies today ensures long-term data security and trust in a quantum-enabled future.
