Databento – Stock Exchange Data in Retail by by Alexander Gornyi

If the market is dominated by the model where one pays for every transaction, it will be easy to attract a client with a subscription – ‘only 100 dollars and no limits.’ If subscription dominates the market, then an attractive offer may sound like ‘ pay only for what you do, we have no regular fees.’

Databento, the American startup of the day, sells stock exchange quotations per gigabyte. As friendly journalists put it, the regular offer on the market today begins at 25 thousand dollars per year – and this bites even for rather large companies. For enthusiasts who like to write a trading bot at home, this is a barrier they cannot overcome. And Databento’s prices begin at 45 cents per gigabyte, you can afford simply to play with it at home and even save a sizeable amount of money on a small project.

The startup’s concept inspires the investors’ enthusiasm, they have already invested over USD 60M in the project. The development goes slowly at that, it’s been four years since the first fundraising, and the company has just made the product available for its first users.
