NCBR funds medical innovations

Medical companies will receive more than PLN 57.5 million for the implementation of innovative projects.NCBR has announced the results of the second competition under the INNOMED programme.

INNOMED is carried out by NCBR in co-operation with companies associated in the Polish Technology Platform for Innovative Medicine. The second competition under this programme was conducted under Measure 1.2 “Sectoral R&D programmes of the Operational Programme Smart Growth, used for implementing large R&D endeavours that are essential for the development of individual industries and economy sectors. Its budget amounted to PLN 95 million.

”Education and research conducted by Polish medical universities is at a high level. Our medical sector must develop at a dynamic pace to maintain this trend. NCBR funding will develop new technologies, facilitate co-operation between scientists and businesses and allow for a gradual implementation of innovative solutions,” says Under-Secretary of State for Science and Higher Education, Minister Piotr Dardziński PhD.

The competition, settled on 23.12.2015,  was addressed to entrepreneurs or consortia made of enterprises. NCBR will provide its support mainly by funding search for innovative medicines, modern therapeutic methods and new technologies of generic drugs production.

“INNOMED is our direct response to the demand from entrepreneurs from the medical field who focus on innovation and are looking for ways to increase the availability and quality of novel therapies and innovative drugs in Poland. By sharing with them the risks associated with conducting R&D and providing resources for the implementation of their ambitious projects, we increase the chance for the introduction of solutions and products developed to the market,” said Deputy Director of the NCBR Leszek Grabarczyk.

The call for proposals in the competition took place in September 2015, with 18 companies having applied for funding. Of these, the NCBR will support 10 with a total amount of over PLN 57.5 million. The own contribution of the winning ten amounted to more than PLN 38 million. The NCBR will finance innovative projects aimed to develop technologies and solutions to improve the quality of life and health of Poles. Projects supported include: work on improving the diagnostic effectiveness of dynamic imaging, innovative anti-cancer medicine that uses p53 reactivation mechanism, as well as preclinical and clinical trials of drugs with anticancer activity.

In total, the NCBR has already allocated more than PLN 1 billion on R&D medical projects to date. In the first competition under INNOMED, 17 consortia received funding to the tune of PLN 110 million. A further amount of more than PLN 670 million was distributed among the innovative projects within  STRATEGMED – “Prevention and treatment of lifestyle diseases”.
