On November 11th, CEE Startup Network concluded its CEE Startup Voucher 2025 with a Grand Finale at Nová Synagóga in Žilina, Slovakia. After weeks of careful evaluation, a panel of prominent CEE VC ecosystem judges selected the most promising applicants, celebrating innovation and entrepreneurial talent across the region. ITKeyMedia highlights the winning startups, among which is OWASmooth — the Slovakian developer of a highly efficient, purely mathematical data-smoothing solution, improving noisy sensor data quality for industries like IoT, robotics, and healthcare without requiring hardware upgrades or heavy computational power.
Intertwined Expertise in Physics and Mathematics with Emphasis on High-Quality Data
OWASmooth co-founders are a power couple of Miroslav Hennel (CEO) and Dr Barbora Hennelová (CSO, COO) who bore it from an unusual combination: cutting-edge science, real-world frustration, and the exact skills needed to approach the problem from two different sides and solve it.
Mr Hennel is an experimental physicist with more than five years of hands-on experience in sensor technology. His day-to-day work involves designing experiments, collecting data, and interpreting results, often under challenging, imperfect conditions. Dr Hennelová, in turn, brings a complementary perspective. She holds a PhD in applied mathematics and has spent over seven years working with advanced data aggregation techniques.

‘One day, I was again struggling with manual data processing, being ready to spend hours in front of the computer screen, and then Barbora realised some of the advanced math models she was dealing with, might be utilised to solve my problem,’ Mr Hennel recalls.
As the two joined efforts, built a small prototype, and tested it on Mr Hennel’s dataset, the results were feasibly better than the standard techniques he had been using prior to that. This was their ‘A-ha!’ moment when they knew they had discovered something worth turning into a real solution for data scientists and the industry.
‘Sensors are everywhere: in our cars, factories, cities, phones, etc. They essentially drive our lives by automatic decisions based on their measurements. However, every measurement is affected by errors — this is a law of nature, a law of physics. Low-quality data causes huge problems and financial losses. IBM revealed that the US economy is losing USD 3.1T annually only because of low-quality data and decisions based on it. Low-quality data hinders the performance of products and the efficiency of processes. In OWASmooth, we decided to change that,’ Mr Hennel explains.
The name ‘OWASmooth’ is an acronym that stands for ‘Optimisation With Advanced Smoothing’, and it literally reflects what the startup does. It started with novel advanced smoothing methods — a sort of data processing which removes sudden changes in the measured data. However, even though the startup launched only this year, it now covers more than advanced smoothing methods and provides complex data solutions which use the latest trends in mathematics. The data to which it can be applied also extended beyond sensor signals, and now includes financial data or even images.
A Rare Collaboration Between Disciplines to Transform Data Across Industries
Reportedly, OWASmooth’s solution improves data quality by over 70% without needing hardware upgrades or heavy computational resources. The targeted industries include IoT, robotics, healthcare, and energy, where OWASmooth provides more reliable data for analytics and decision-making.
‘OWASmooth solution covers proper tuning of our own unique mathematical model to immediately, in a single step, transform noisy data into actionable information which drives better decisions,’ Dr Hennelová summarizes.
‘The best analogy for what we do is in Michelangelo’s famous quote: ‘David was always there in the marble. I just took away everything that was not David.’ And we do the same: the truth is always in the data. OWASmooth simply removes the noise around it,’ Mr Hennel adds.

Dr Barbora Hennelová, Co-Founder, CSO, and COO at OWASmooth
Dr Hennelová further points out that it could be probable for a solution like OWASmooth to have turned up earlier, but the necessary combination of skills in physics and mathematics on top of mutual understanding of each other’s problems is surprisingly rare. As a married couple, OWASmooth’s co-founders do share their troubles and headaches with one another, and the data processing problem did take up a lot of their shared attention before they came up with their solution.
‘These days, the fundamental research is unfortunately too specific, and there is little collaboration between different branches of science. Mathematicians do not know about the real problems of physicists or engineers. Moreover, scientists usually focus only on their own research and do not search for collaboration in order to solve problems outside of their close colleagues. But we are a bright example that collaboration is the correct path for innovations,’ Mr Hennel points out.
Looking Ahead
‘For us, CEE Startup Voucher provided an amazing opportunity to meet investors, other entrepreneurs, and all of our startup friends to share experiences. Flomoni and shealed, you are special! The best part of the CEE Startup Voucher started right after the event, as we won expert mentoring and startup analysis from SCALEUP.report, and it was amazing. Marek Blizco’s team provided us with deep insights about what we do and how to improve internal processes to be successful in the global market,’ Mr Hennel shares in conclusion.
Dr Hennelová adds that OWASmooth applied for the EIC Pre-Accelerator, in the coming year, the young company plans to start raising for its Pre-Seed round in order to bring OWASmooth to a wider audience, strengthen the team, and accelerate product development.
OWASmooth’s innovative approach and its second place in the CEE Startup Voucher 2025 underscore the critical importance of high-quality data in today’s sensor-driven world. The co-founders’ unique blend of physics and mathematics expertise brings about a solution that turns noisy measurements into actionable insights across multiple industries. With this added momentum, OWASmooth is well-positioned to make a significant impact on data-driven decision-making and industrial efficiency globally.
